​Why You May Need an MFM Visit

 

An MFM visit is often recommended if:

• You have a medical condition, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or autoimmune disease

• You had problems in a past pregnancy

• You are pregnant at an older age

• There are concerns about the baby’s growth or development​​

What Happens During the Visit

 

During your MFM visit, you can expect:

• Detailed review of your history: The doctor will go over your medical history, past pregnancies, and test results

• Pregnancy assessment: Your current pregnancy will be checked for any concerns

• Discussion and planning: The doctor will explain findings, answer questions, and help plan next steps

• Special testing if needed: This usually includes a detailed ultrasound and possibly other tests. We try to obtain a 3D image of your baby as a keepsake, whenever the baby cooperates and gives us a good look!

• Evaluation and management in the hospital, if requested by your obstetrician.

• Other consultations when helpful: We may recommend further evaluation by other medical specialists in Memphis or beyond, such as a neonatologist (ICU baby doctor), genetic counselor, cardiologist, fetal surgeon or other consultant.

What doesn't typically happen in our office:

• Routine prenatal care: You'll still get your regular care, labs, vaccinations and cervical examinations from your obstetrician, midwife or nurse practitioner.

• Sick visits while pregnant: If you feel ill (flu-like symptoms, abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding), in most cases it's best to see your obstetrician or primary care physician.

• Regularly scheduled fetal monitoring: If non-stress test fetal evaluation is needed on a once or twice weekly basis later in pregnancy, it is usually performed by your obstetrician's office.

• Management of labor and delivery: Except for rare circumstances, your regular obstetric provider will deliver your baby.

How MFM Visits Fit into Your Prenatal Care

 

MFM visits support your regular pregnancy care by:

• Managing higher risks: Potential problems are found early and addressed

• Supporting your care team: Your main OB provider collaborates with the MFM specialist, assessing the need for special testing and determining the best time for delivery

• Helping you decide: You get clear information to make informed choices about your care and delivery

If You're Hospitalized While Pregnant

If you've already met with our team during your pregnancy and your obstetrician requests our assistance, we will gladly see you in the hospital via telehealth before, during or after delivery. On occasion, in-person evaluation may be needed as well.
